Five Questions to Ask About Position Sizing

Good questions expose weak assumptions before they become expensive. Use the questions in this article to decide whether a setup deserves more research, a smaller position, or no trade.

Position size is the bridge between analysis and survival. In volatile crypto markets, uncertainty should be reflected in exposure before the trade begins.

Questions that improve the decision

  1. Verify the foundation

Define the maximum acceptable loss, the invalidation point, and the expected execution cost. Size follows from those inputs rather than conviction alone.

  1. Add market context

Cap exposure relative to liquidity and portfolio concentration. Several correlated memecoin positions can behave like one oversized trade.

  1. Look for confirmation and conflict

Plan for gaps, failed exits, contract events, and rapid liquidity withdrawal. The worst practical outcome may exceed a chart-based stop.

Turn research into a decision

The common mistake is increasing size to recover a recent loss or because a social signal feels unusually certain. Answer every question in writing with a source, timestamp, and confidence level. If the answer depends on a label or claim, ask what observable behavior supports it. An unanswered critical question is information about risk, not permission to assume the best.

Use at least two independent sources when a result affects risk. Tools can classify wallets, contracts, and transactions differently, so disagreements should be investigated rather than averaged away. Save the contract address and timestamp with every note because token labels and dashboards can change.

A simple operating routine

  • What exactly is being claimed?

Which source can confirm or reject the claim?

What evidence would change the current answer?

How does uncertainty change position size or the decision to walk away?

Consistent sizing prevents one uncertain idea from controlling the entire portfolio. The process should remain useful when the market is quiet, when a token is trending, and when a position is moving against you.
